Kohala Wholesome Food Co.

Kohala Wholesome Food Company was founded by Dylan Foster in 2006 as a way to provide homemade organic dog food for the local holistic veterinary clinic, Kapa’au Veterinary Center, on the Big Island of Hawaii. After successful use of holistic therapies and whole foods to recover himself and his dog from grave illness, Dylan understood the importance of microbially enriched, pre-digested and pre-masticated vegetal matter in his dog’s diet, just as canine found in the paunch of their prey or in the offerings of their best friends. When he afforded this and some organ meats as part of the diet for his mastiff and himself, the physical regeneration was striking, to say the least. Dylan and the clinic staff still eat the muffins, veggies and treats!

This prompted Dylan and his holistic veterinarian, Dr. Robin Woodley, to conduct a friendly feeding trial to measure the results of a homemade, organic diet by monitoring bloodwork and more for over 2 dozen dogs through an eight week period. The results were very encouraging and most of the dogs insisted their owners continue feeding them freshly prepared Mana Muffins, thus began Kohala Wholesome Food Company.

As word spread and dogs visited the mainland, we began shipping muffins and treats from Big Island, Hawaii to the states and were afforded the opportunity to learn and practice ancestral devices used for natural preservation and duplicate this technology using Beneficial Microorganisms.

As of December of 2008, Evan Short took over ownership of the company in an effort to provide wholesome and biologically appropriate diets to our canine friends. He comes from a background of animal nutrition and a wealth of knowledge about culturing of probiotic foods. As of September 2009, he has moved to Southern Oregon to facilitate the spread of healthy foods for animals of all kinds. In a short period of time, he has found a large level of acceptance and welcoming for his products. As well as a plethora of the highest quality ingredients from local producers.
