Why sprouted?

Kohala Wholesome Food Company sprouts all of the whole grains present in the Mana Dog Food products and believes that sprouted whole grains are more easily digested and nutritionally bioavailable than conventional grain preparations as well as biologically appropriate for dogs. This belief is well supported by scientific literature. Phytic acid is present in all grains and inhibits the absorption into the body of important minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc. The phytic acid in grains causes consumers to develop vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Sprouting whole grains utilizes the natural enzymes found in grains called phytases to significantly reduce detrimental phytic acids. Sprouting also increases the availability of anti-oxidants, beneficial enzymes and Vitamins B, C, and E. Every handmade batch of Mana Dog Food is meticulously sprouted to reduce the phytic acids present in grains to increase the nutritional value and availability of the food.

Our sprouting process is historically and biologically appropriate. Wolves and wild dogs would traditionally hunt herbivores and immediately consume the predigested vegetable material present in the stomach and the nutritious organ meats. The wolves would often bury the remainder of kill to enable fermentation from natural soil microorganisms. When canines were domesticated by humans, their traditional feeding methods and access to fermented living foods was replaced by “dead”, conventional canine diets. Conventional dog food is processed and extruded at extremely high temperatures and pressures which destroys originally available vitamins, digestive enzymes and beneficial microorganisms that canines desperately need to thrive. Dogs develop itchy skin, hot spots, ear infections, excess shedding, dull coat, allergies, odors of the skin and mouth when their diets do not contain beneficial microorganisms and adequate available nutrients.
